Kari Barber is a journalist-turned filmmaker who likes to keep a foot in both worlds. After several years of working overseas in Africa and Asia as a TV/radio reporter, Kari took an interest in Alaska and folks who are seeking new beginnings in life. From this came BAKING ALASKA – her directorial debut. Kari has worked on documentary films that have aired on PBS and LinkTV and was a researcher and reporter for two documentaries for the PBS show Frontline. Originally an Okie from Oklahoma City, Kari will begin work this fall in Reno as a professor of journalism at the University of Nevada. Kari gained 5 pounds each time she went to the bakery to film. She loves their savory scones.
Tom Fish editor/associate producer
Tom Fish is a video producer and editor, graphic designer, and communications specialist with over ten years of experience developing communication tools for businesses, educators, and scientists, as well as the entertainment industry. Fish was awarded the 2012 TIVA-DC Peer Awards, Silver Award for his editing of The Bonobo Connection, a documentary that won six 2012 TIVA-DC Peer Awards. Fish is also editor and associate producer of ARC OF LIGHT: A Portrait of Anna Campbell Bliss, a documentary that won two 2012 TIVA-DC Peer Awards. Nico Colombant editor
Formerly a foreign correspondent for the Voice of America in West Africa, Nico is a documentary and web video filmmaker who specializes in riots, guerrilla filmmaking and crunch editing. His film OUT FOR GOOD was an official selection of the Congressional Black Caucus film festival and Our City Film Festival in Washington, DC in 2011. A native Frenchman, Nico’s favorite baked good is pain au chocolat (aka chocolate croissant).
Kendall Combes music composer
Kendall Combes is a composer, music producer, and songwriter living in Oklahoma City, OK. After 15 years of touring with various artists internationally, he has transitioned into writing and producing music for TV and Film. He’s had music on What not to Wear, Say Yes to the Dress, Last Call w/Carson Daly, NY Ink and received a Gold medal award at PCFMF in 2011. Kendall also teaches part time at the Academy of Contemporary Music / University of Central Oklahoma. When asked what his favorite bakery items are he answers “yes, please”!
Esin Ozdag motion graphic artist
Esin is a motion graphic artist based in the Washington, D.C. area. She graduated summa cum laude from American University’s Master of Arts program in Film and Video in 2011. During her time at American, she completed an internship with Discovery Communications and assisted in teaching an animation workshop in Morrocco, helping students produce an animated music video. Her favorite baked good is key lime pie.
Ben Chesneau sound designer
Ben is a senior Audio Production major at American University in DC. After living in France and Singapore as a child, Ben finally settled down in New York where he discovered a passion for guitar and music. His favorite baked goods are oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
Laura Triana is a graphic artist from Bogota, Colombia. She studied Advertising Design in San Jose, Costa Rica with a semester abroad in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. She also earned an MA in Film and Video in Washington, DC. Also a passionate musician (drummer), Laura studied one year of music in Colombia and a certificate course of Audio Production in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Gillian Griffith is a freelance graphic artist and writer, residing in Reno, Nevada. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Gillian is currently working on a memoir about growing up in casinos, an excerpt from which will be published in an upcoming short-story collection about coming-of-age in Nevada titled, Sagebrushed. Gillian also works part-time for the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada as a development and communications assistant. Her favorite baked good is marble pound cake.
Josh MacEachern is an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, currently finishing his degree in journalism with a minor in business administration. Originally from Las Vegas, he enjoys reading, playing his bagpipes, and coming up with third things for lists. His favorite baked good is chocolate cupcakes.
